Why the Filibuster is unnecessary and provides an unfair advantage

New random thought - Why do we need the "Filibuster" rule?  If all states are represented by two senators, no matter the geological or population size, doesn't that already provide smaller states an equal voice if they oppose or support legislation?  In the least, I content there is no need for a filibuster in the Senate.

In the house of representatives, one can make an argument supporting the filibuster because there are many more representatives from New York, California, Texas and Florida.  If there was not a filibuster rule, these states could form a caucus or consortium to pass laws that favor their constituent industries and people.

I actually think the campaign finance law is fair, but unnecessary.  Why let organizations that can't vote or don't pay taxes promote any agenda or candidate?  That doesn't make sense.  It's like representation without taxation.  They exercise free speech, but have none of the responsibilities.  Theses should not be tax exempt organizations, since they can promote policies that may actually do harm than good.  They can say whatever they want, but they should be held responsible like everyone else.

Thought for the day

Hello and welcome to my new blog.  I guess you can generally consider me a business man, but I have a broad background as a musician, producer, writer, husband, father and entrepreneur.  I love technology and generally consider myself to be independent politically.

The reason for this blog is to start a conversation with anyone interested regarding effective leadership in the US, or the lack thereof, and how we can implement cultural changes so the next generation of Americans can become effective, skilled leaders.

I realize a trend in recent movements and organizations- both private, business organizations that I am involved with, as well as non-profit, NGOs or community organizations - that there is a shrinkage of  the pool of candidates who can be groomed for leadership.

Recently we have seen cultural fustration expressed at the polls, with voters replacing incumbents with candidates who offer little as far as leadership and vision.  Rather, the people who campaign now promote their ability to manage and be good administrators (good project managers) which is great for them and they people that need things delivered on time and on budget.  It leaves me, and I suspect many others, hungry for people who can envision where we need to be and explain what steps we need to take to get there.

That is the legacy of Steve Jobs - He wasn't a great project manager, but he was a great leader.  He obviously didn't learn that in school, but we can learn form him.  We can replicate the environments and the practices used to make great companies, organizations, products, and communities.

My suggested approach is to start teaching leadership - how to take charge, act ethically, and motivate people toward a goal - regardless of the platform be it business, government,  social or theological.

I have realized that one fundamental thing that the Tea Party movement and the Occupy movement have in common is a lack of visible, coherent leadership.  Aside from candidates who leverage the movements to their own personal advantage, there is no one person I know of that is the definitive leader of either movement, who can communicate the organizations vision and goals clearly and effectively, and who can rally the interested parties to act.

Is it because it is too risky today and our best leaders avoid public exposure and prefer to remain in private business?  Is it because the US does  not provide the community structure to identify potential leaders and build those skills?

To me, younger generations are taught how to be team members very well, and are used to being managed.  However, many do not know how to take the lead of a team or small group without a proctor or coach.
Aside from the military, which does a great job of recognizing and cultivating leaders in my opinion, how is it done in our culture and society today?  What can we improve? What makes a good and effective leader in modern society?

Feel free to post your comments.  I welcome any contribution.
